Strike at CU, shuttle trains snapped

Supporters of the deceased central Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury are observing an indefinite strike at Chittagong University (CU) to press home their five-point demand.

The pre-announced strike started from Sunday is hampering academic activities including classes and examinations as the protestors allegedly obstructed rail and road communication with the campus.

The five-point demand called under the banner of `general students` include ensuring securities for the students, maintaining fair atmosphere of education, assurance of neutral and fair probe in Diaz murder, bringing killers immediately under justice and removing the university proctorial body.

Diaz`s follower Sumon Kanti Chowdhury, Joint Secretary of BCL-CU unit, said, “General students called the strike demanding implementation of a five-point demand. We also gave our support to the movement.”

Meanwhile a group of protestors snapped the hose between several compartments of a university shuttle train at Chittagong railway station in the morning.

Later, the authorities suspended the train service on security grounds, said Md Shahabuddin, station master of Sholoshahar Railway Station.

The railway official, however, could not give any time for resuming the service.
